In non-technical terms, a Virtual Private Server (or sometimes called a Virtual Dedicated Server) is one very large powerful system sliced into smaller servers so that each section operates like a small dedicated server independent of all the other slices. Each VPS can run its own operating system, has its own dedicated section of processing power, hard drive space and memory and can be used for whatever purposes you need it for (eg. a mail server, web server etc.).
Is a VPS right for my business?
A VPS is the ideal hosting solution for businesses too large for a shared hosting plan but not quite big enough to justify the costs of having a whole server of your own. It's also a great solution for businesses that have specific hosting requirements that are not widely supported - when you have your own VPS you can pretty-much install and run whatever software you like.
