For a definitive explanation of the differences between Active and Passive FTP, have a look at this article: Active FTP vs. Passive FTP
Having a good FTP program can make the process of uploading and publishing your website a lot easier. Some of the FTP software programs which our clients have found useful are:
For Apple Macintosh:
Microsoft Internet Explorer also has an in-built FTP client which is very easy to use. To use Internet Explorer’s FTP client, open Internet Explorer. In the “Address” bar at the top of the screen type: ftp:// Followed by your domain name. You will then be prompted for your username and password. Once you have typed these details you will be presented with two or three folders. Double click on the “web” folder and then simply drag-and-drop the files you would like to upload into the Internet Explorer window.
For a website to be published using Microsoft FrontPage a feature called FrontPage Extensions needs to be enabled for your account. To have this feature enabled, please contact Ingenuity’s technical support team on 1300 66 46 43, email:firstname.lastname@example.org or follow this link to our Online Contact Form.
Once FrontPage Extensions are enabled, you should be able to publish your site by opening FrontPage, selecting the “File” menu and click on the “Publish” option. This will prompt you for your domain name, your username and password. Once you have successfully entered these details, two windows will be displayed on your screen. The window on the Left shows the web files on your local computer. The window on the right shows the files that are on our webserver. Select your files from the left window and drag them to the right window.

The most common method of uploading your website is via FTP (File Transfer Protocol). Another popular method of publishing websites is using Microsoft’s FrontPage. To connect to our webserver via FTP you will need to use some FTP software. To help you decide on what software to use, we have provided a list of Good FTP Software. Regardless of what FTP program you decide to use, they all require the same basic information:
FTP Access Details
|Your Domain Name
Some FTP programs do not require ALL the details above, so don’t panic if your software does not ask for some of the above information. Your Username and Password should be included in the Welcome email that was sent to you when your account was first activated.
Once you’ve logged in via FTP, you will normally be presented with two subdirectories: “cgi-bin” and “web” (some web hosting packages have a third directory called “logs”). You should upload all your website pages into the “web” subdirectory.
Please ensure that the main page for your website is called: “index.html”, “index.htm” or “index.php” otherwise our webserver will not be able to find your website.
