Web Hosting Features

Email

Email has become one of the most essential parts of business communication – in a lot of companies it is equally as important as having a telephone. Make sure your host offers a full email solution which includes spam and virus filtering, web-based email access for when you’re away from the office, auto-responders when you go on holidays and backup email servers to queue messages if the mail server goes down.

Statistics

It is nice to know how many visitors you've had, where they came from, how long they stayed on your site, what pages they visited and how much bandwidth they've used. This information can also be useful for tracking the success of marketing campaigns and is crucial if you ever delve into Search Engine Optimisation (which I’ll discuss further in another article).

Most web hosting providers will offer some form of statistics, some better than others and some hosts will make you pay extra for this feature. There are plenty of free statistics solutions around, so try and avoid hosts that charge extra for statistics as it should be a free service with all hosting packages.

FTP

FTP stands for file transfer protocol and this is the method most commonly used to transfer files between your computer and your hosting provider. To upload your files using FTP, you will require an FTP program on your computer. For information on good FTP software, have a look at this article: Good FTP Software with Ingenuity Hosting
