What is “web hosting” and how does it work?
Web hosting is the business practice of providing space and bandwidth (for websites and emails) on a powerful computer server which is connected to the Internet at very high speeds. Most web hosting companies maintain large networks of computer servers specifically designed to maintain websites, email and databases and these servers are physically located in a data centre. The data centre provides the high speed internet connection for the servers, environmental controls (air conditioning, fire suppression, etc.), redundant/backup power supplies, redundant internet connections and 24/7 security monitoring.

The web hosting company provides clients with an allocation of disk space for their site, bandwidth to ensure the site runs at optimum speed and the provision of email addresses all for a monthly fee. Once the customer has signed up, they can upload files to their web space on the server and the information is then accessible via the internet. The monthly fee charged by the web host is far less than what it would cost to maintain a server out of your own home or data centre. This is the reason why web hosting companies exist – to take care of all the hardware, software, and other technical needs for your company.
