Owning a website in 3 simple steps - where to begin

After hearing some of the technical terms on the last page, I know you’re probably thinking, what's a domain name or hosting account and HTML sounds like something that would be produced from some chemical lab.

Here is an analogy that might help:

You live in a home or an apartment that is built on a certain piece of land (which you rent or own). That piece of land has a specific street address.

Your website (which is made-up of a collection of individual web pages) sits on a web hosting account that you rent. Just like your street address, the hosting account is found at a specific address – this is called a domain name.

So…

Your Home = Your Website
Your Street Address (eg. 12 Smith St, Brisbane) = Your domain name (eg. www.yourname.com)
The plot of land that your house sits on = Your web hosting account
Your physical house/apartment (made up of lots of rooms) = Your web site (made up of lots of pages)

Here’s the 3 step process:

STEP 1: Choose the address you want (www.yourname.com)
STEP 2: Rent some space from a web hosting provider
STEP 3: Build the house (website) you want and place it on the space you bought
                    in step 2

Let's explain each step in more detail...

Next: STEP 1: Choose your address (a domain name) >>
